Rugby News & Views From an American Perspective

Don’t Forget About the Kids

Pretty much all of my coverage here has focused on adult rugby, the Eagles, and mostly the USA Rugby Super League. Even more so lately as I went on my two part journey into a professional rugby league here in the United States. It’s all well and good, but we cannot forget about the kids. Getting our children playing rugby at a young age is just as important (probably even more so) as a professional league in terms of the developement of rugby here in the USA. Even more important is that children learn the core values that rugby represents. Rugby has a long road to tread here in the USA in regards to it’s reputation. Bringing children through the rugby ranks, in a way that positively promotes the sport of rugby, will be one of the ways to clear those hurdles and break down the stereotypes that have been built up over the years.

Getting paid professional rugby players in the USA is great, but we can’t forget about the kids.

Our coach started a Mini-rugby program in March. He sent flyers to only two elementary schools. The one where he teaches and the one where his son attends. Over 50 kids turned out for the one-hour, Monday and Wednesday practices, just to learn the game and to play “exhibition” games against each other.Next year, the invitation will go out area-wide. The fields will be reserved to have the youth program train immediately prior to the club training on Tuesdays and Thursdays. We should have plenty of assistant coaches from the club side.Pretty simple concept, HUGE upside.

No doubt about it. Everyone out there should be doing some part in getting rugby in front of kids. Our club is running an exhibition for kids age 5-14 this summer and plans are to springboard it into a full blown youth program. Even if 20 kids show up, it’ll be worth it, but odds are is we’ll get alot more. Just as you said… it’s a very simple concept and the upside is unlimited.
