Rugby News & Views From an American Perspective
The IRB has released the draw for the Wellington, New Zealand 7’s stop on the IRB 7’s Circuit that takes place February 6-7, 2009. Here are the pools.
Pool A: South Africa, Kenya, Scotland, Tonga
Pool B: New Zealand, Australia, Wales, Niue
Pool C: England, Argentina, France, Canada
Pool D: Fiji, Samoa, USA, Cook Islands
The draws for the 7’s series are rarely easy these days, so it is no surprise that the USA is in another tough pool. It could be argued that they are in the toughest pool of the tournament. Fiji is… well, Fiji. Samoa is always a strong 7’s squad and is off to another good start this season. Between those two squads, it’s like having two #1 seeds in the same pool. Cook Islands round out the pool and they are a very solid 7’s side and could give the Eagles trouble. This is their first stop on the IRB circuit this season, so hopefully they’ll come in with a bit of rust.
This stop also sees Canada in action for the first time this season.
We’ll have more in depth coverage of the pool and the matchups in the week leading up to the New Zealand 7’s, but at first glance the Eagles defintely have their work cut out for them. Losing Todd Clever, who will be in South Africa training for the upcoming Super 14 season, won’t help things out either.
