Tackling Technique From the NZRU

The Coaching videos here at Rugby America have leaned towards providing tips from coaches in America. After all, this site is geared towards American rugby. However, we’re not limiting ourselves. A great coaching video is a great coaching video… whether it comes from America, England, South Africa, or wherever. The important part is that the coaches and players that come here learn something valuable that they can take with them onto training, into games, and become better players and coaches.

That’s why we couldn’t resist sharing this tackling technique video from the New Zealand Rugby Union. The session is conducted by Pat Lam, current head coach of the Blues in the Super 15. Lam, a loose forward, played professionally for the Newcastle Falcons and Northampton Saints. At the International level, Lam played one game (non-test) for the All Blacks before going on to win 34 caps for Samoa, including playing 10 World Cup matches.

The tackling video is clearly explained from basic body positioning progressing all the way to full tackles. The points made in the session can be translated to any level of play, but have significant importance to players and coaches at levels where contact is first being introduced or players have limited experience with full-contact rugby.
