Claremont Buckles Under BYU Pressure

Pomona, CA– The BYU Cougars kicked-off their 2011 season with a win against 2010 Division II National Champion Claremont Colleges by the score of 86-0 last night in the first of three games on a Southern California warmup tour.

The Cougars totaled a tally of 14 tries against Claremont with 8 tries going to the backs and the reamaining 6 being scored by the forwards. BYU’s scoring output was led by freshman wing Josh Whippey who touched down four tries. Vice-Captain, Apenisa Malani, who was returning for the first time tonight from a knee injury last season, scored a pair of tries in the onslaught.

It was the Cougars’ defensive pressure that contributed to a number of Claremont turn-overs and over half of the BYU tries.

“We really wanted to set the tone for the game early with our defensive effort,” said BYU captain Ryan Roundy. “We wanted to make sure it was tough for them at every phase of the game and I think we did that overall.”

The scoring started in the 6th minute as Whippey’s twin brother Jared kicked a ball wide that was regathered by freshman flanker David Williams. The off loads that ensued saw five other Cougars touch the ball before sophomore hooker Ishmael Tilialo barged in for the game’s first try.

Pressure continued to mount for Claremont as BYU took a 43-0 lead into the half.

With an open subs policy for the match BYU played a total of 31 players on the evening with scoring not stopping in the second half as the Cougars rolled up another 43 points.

When the final whistle blew the Cougars had notched an 86-0 shutout win over the defending Division II Champions.

BYU regroups and heads to San Diego tomorrow where they will square off against the University of San Diego.

Kick-off is set for 3pm PT at USD’s Manchester Field.
