Cal Poly Outlasts UCLA

Cal Poly outlasted UCLA on Saturday in a pre-season warmup for the two Division I Premier Pacific Conference foes. In a match that had a combined 65 points and 11 tries, the Mustangs pulled out a difficult road win 41-24.

Freshman wing Dominic Ferri and scrumhalf Colin Malcolm each scored two tries in the seven try outburst from Cal Poly. Center Stu Sharpe, flanker David  Schaefer, and lock Charlie Hamilton each added tries in the winning effort for the Mustangs.

The warmup was a preview of the Pacific Conference opener for both teams. UCLA is set to open up conference play on March 5th at Cal Poly. The early season matchup gave both teams the chance to do some advance scouting and in Cal Poly’s case… build a bit of confidence going into conference play.

The two teams followed the match with a B-Side in which Cal Poly dominated by a score of 34-0.
