Central Washington has taken home the title at the CRC 7’s Division at the Las Vegas Invitational. With that victory, Central Washington gets an automatic bid to play in the Collegiate Rugby Championship June 5-6th in Philadelphia.
Central Washington shut out a physical Kutztown University with a 14-0 victory in the championship. For the tournament, Central Washington went an amazing 7-0, including 4-0 in the knockout rounds.
The CRC, set to be broadcast live on NBC, heads into it’s second year with some new and returning teams in the field. Central Washington joins defending champion Utah, runner-up Cal, as well as Army, Navy, Notre Dame, North Carolina, Temple, Boston College, Penn State, Arizona and LSU.
Central Washington stands out amongst the group as they are not a household name in collegiate sports, but their rugby speaks for itself. The CRC 7’s Division at the LVI was the perfect vehicle to get teams, such as Central Washington, a chance to challenge for the collegiate 7’s title even though they aren’t a known brand in college athletics.
That opportunity was seized by a handful of other teams that went deep into the tournament such as Kutztown, Miami of Ohio, Delaware, Stonybrook, and UC Davis.
With twelve teams now booked for the CRC, four slots are still to be determined. Announcements on the remaining participants are expected in the coming months.
