College Rugby: Weekend Preview

by Ted Hardy, Editor, Rugby America

Having trouble wrapping your head around all of the great college rugby going on this weekend? You have come to the right place, because it is not easy to keep track of all of it. Conferences have progressively been coming online in the past month and with the kickoff of the Collegiate Premier Division, aka CPL aka Division I Premier, the college rugby season is officially in full swing.

Maybe someday these games will be on TV and you’ll pour over the list to pick out which ones you want to watch.

In the meantime, here’s a look at some of the college rugby going on this weekend across the nation.

Atlantic Coast Rugby League

Starting off in the Atlantic Coast Rugby League, the ACRL has three exciting games ready to roll this weekend. With a full weekend of conference action already in the books, the ACRL has not disappointed. Matchups have been intruiging, well played, and has already produced some surprises.

University of Virginia at NC State (1-0) – The University of Virginia opens up their conference schedule this weekend against North Carolina State. The Wolfpack comes off a 34-6 win over Georgia Tech and have upset in mind as they play host to the Cavaliers.

Maryland (0-1) at Wake Forest (0-1) – The Terrapins head to North Carolina for the second straight weekend. Maryland and Wake Forest are both coming off opening weekend losses. It should be a good matchup between two teams that can’t afford to start the season with two straight losses.

North Carolina (1-0) at Clemson (1-0) – The match of the weekend in the ACRL, North Carolina is riding high after knocking off Maryland last weekend as is Clemson who posted a convincing victory over Wake Forest last week.

Collegiate Premier Division

Moving onto the new Collegiate Premier Division, there are plenty of great games on tap including the Wasatch Cup battle between BYU and Utah.

CPD Rugby East Conference

Rutgers at Army – Rutgers has alot to prove and will be up against the wall on the road to face Army in the Rugby East Conference opener.

Dartmouth at Delaware – One of the best games on tap for the entire weekend. Ivy League powerhouse on the road to face the dangerous Blue Hens of Delaware.

Ohio St. at Navy – It’s going to be a learning year for the Buckeyes and it starts with a trip to face Navy.

CDP Mid-South Conference

Oklahoma at Texas A&M – Looking forward to seeing the results from this game. Two solid programs looking to start their conference schedule on the right foot.

Tennessee at Life – The marquee matchup in the Mid-South this weekend. Don’t discount the Volunteers who have had a good buildup to conference play. Plus, they’re at home. This game should be closer than most expect.

CPD Western Conference

Colorado at Arizona St. – Arizona State is ready to make some noise in conference play and they get Colorado at home to start the season. The Buffaloes head south looking to knock off the Sun Devils. The two teams have little history against each other, so this one should be interesting.

BYU at Utah – The big one… The Wasatch Cup. Plenty has already been said about this one. Too bad it won’t be on TV for everyone to watch.

Wyoming at Air Force – Air Force comes into conference play with a chip on their shoulder as Utah and BYU have been getting all of the hype. Wyoming starts their rebuilding year on the road against a tough opponent. How this game goes may be a good indicator of how their season goes.

CPD Pacific Conference

California at San Diego St. – The big matchup in the Pacific Conference, Cal should dominate this one. San Diego State may still be stinging after losing to Arizona a couple weeks back. Expect the Golden Bears to be clinical and merciless.

Central Washington at Claremont – Claremont were punished in their pre-conference schedule by fellow CPD teams. the Wildcats have much to prove and may use Claremont to send an early message.

St. Mary’s at UC Davis – Conference contender, St. Mary’s, opens up on the road against a solid UC Davis. Should be a good game.

UCLA at Cal Poly-SLO – UCLA travels to take on Cal Poly in a rematch of a pre-season game that took place a few weeks back. Cal Poly got the upper hand the first time around, can they repeat or does UCLA get revenge?

Northwest Collegiate Rugby Conference

The men from the NCRC have been in full swing for a few weeks now, but get back in action after having their entire schedule cancelled last weekend due to snow.

Western Washington (0-2) vs. University of Washington (0-3) – The Vikings and Huskies come into this matchup well rested and hungry to get into the win column.

Eastern Washington (1-1) vs. University of Oregon (0-2) – The Eagles look to keep the momentum after notching their first DI victory in school history, but the Ducks won’t lay down having already faced powerhouses UBC and CWU in league play.

Oregon State (2-0) vs. Washington State (2-0) – The Beavers host the Cougars in a battle of the unbeatens and a pivotal game with playoff implications.

Other Action from Around College Rugby

Vanderbilt at Auburn – The Tigers and Commodores meet up in the finals of the DII Southeastern Rugby Conference. The SERC is set to move up to Division I status in the fall as most of the traditional SEC teams are set to join.

Stanford at Sacramento State – Stanford is off to a great start in conference play and have already beaten Sacramento State at home. Can they repeat on the road?

There is probably even more college rugby on tap, but this should hold you over for the time being.
