Rugby News & Views From an American Perspective

The College Premier Division has annouced the conference Players of the Week for the third week of play in the newly formed competition. With a light load of games on the schedule this past weekend, the focus was only on a handful of games, but there were still plenty of great efforts put forth to make the choices difficult.
Rugby East Conference
Ryan Goulding, Penn St., Soph., Lock (Roslyn Heights, NY)
Saturday: Two tries in a 30-29 win over Kutztown
Coach Notes: Switched from lock to flanker this week, and in his first start at this position he scored two tries in five minutes in the second half to take the team from losing 19-10 to winning 20-19 and change the momentum. Ryan was a physical presence all over the pitch all day, and played very well on both sides of the ball in his first match back from a leg fracture.
Previous Rugby East Winners
March 12: Jimmy Kowalski, Delaware, Fullback
March 5: Ricky Neel-Feller, Navy, Scrumhalf
Sean Peterson, Notre Dame, Soph., Flyhalf (Carmichael, Calif.)
Saturday: 1 penalty kick and 1 conversion in a 15-11 win at LSU
Coach Notes: Controlled the game from start to finish. Mature performance on his part.
Previous Mid-South Winners
March 12: David Caswell, Arkansas St., Wing
March 5: Cameron Dolan, Life, No. 8
Ryan Roundy, BYU, Jr., No. 8 (Holliday, Utah)
Thursday: CPD season-high seven tries in a 94-5 win over Colorado
Coach Notes: He leads from the front. You won’t see very many better performances by an individual player than the one he had on Thursday.
Previous Western Winners
March 12: Don Pati, Utah, Scrumhalf
March 5: Carson Cleveland, Air Force, Flyhalf
Joe Brophy, St. Mary’s, Sr., No. 8 (Redwood City, Calif.)
Saturday: Two tries in a 46-5 win over San Diego State
Coach Notes: Great range on a rainy day. Joe’s athleticism and superb rugby intellect had him in the right place at the right time for the majority of the contest.
Previous Pacific Winners
March 12: Duncan Kelm, San Diego St., Center
March 5: Stuart Sharpe, Cal Poly-SLO, Fullback
